Down a historical muleteer trail at a donkey’s pace….
Navacelles with its canyon, via the magnificent muleteer trail, the postman’s route a breathtaking descent of 300 m to reach the lovely promontory of Navacelles canyon: the Baume Auriol (your point of departure) right to the bottom of the canyon to explore the hamlet there, the lovely river Vis and its waterfalls.
A gentle descent of about one hour, and then the whole day to explore the gorges of the river Vis and the majestic beauty spot of Navacelles, listed alongside the Grands Causses as a UNESCO natural heritage area. At the end of the day, when you feel like it you can climb back up the postman’s trail, and your long-eared travelling companions will carry the children and luggage as far as the promontory at the Baume Auriol.
Food: Bring a packed lunch,
Equipment: Good strong hiking boots and a drinking bottle. Map and all the necessary packing gear provided with the donkey.
Details: Departure from 9h30 on the day with a return before 6 p.m.
Duration of the descent, there and back (excluding your trek inside the Canyon at Navacelles): 3 km, 2 hours
There’s a 300 m descent down into the canyon and a 300m climb on the way back up!
